Psalm 37 Continued…

One of my favorite movies is the 1995 movie, Braveheart. The film is the story of the historical character William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson), a commoner who begins a revolt against the cruel English tyrant who rules Scotland. Wallace was motivated by his passion for a free Scotland, as well as his anger over the injustices carried out by the English, who killed his wife. In the movie the Scottish rebels, led by Wallace, face off against their enemy. In order to avoid a battle, the two sides talk under a white flag of truce. Wallace gives the English this ultimatum: “Lower your flags and march straight back to England, stopping at every home you pass by to beg forgiveness for a hundred years of theft, rape, and murder. Do that, and you and your men shall live. Do it not, and every one of you will die today.”

It is a powerful scene, by the way. Anyone who has lived in this world for a while knows what it feels like to be the victim of injustice (maybe not quite to the extent of William Wallace). Most of us have seen the injustice of the wicked, those who cheat and lie in order to get ahead, often at the expense of the powerless.

Just like Wallace told the English oppressors, the only hope of an unjust world lies in marching straight to God and asking…begging for forgiveness, in light of Jesus’ death, for all the acts of injustice ever committed.

PRAY

Father God forgive us for the times we perpetrated injustice toward our fellow man…either in thought or deed.

What I Do: I am the Minister of the Word at The Fort. My primary duties are teaching the scriptures and casting a vision for God’s family at The Fort. Interesting Fact About Me: I have felt a call to preach since I was in ninth grade. The Fort is only my second church to serve as a preacher, and, God willing, will be my last. I Choose To Worship At The Fort Because: I believe in the vision of this church, and I trust the leadership of this church. Most of all, though, I love the people of The Fort–their passion, their generosity, and their commitment to the mission of God.
